Yes, this is the famous Hurtigruten cruise described by Lonely Planet as `The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage´.  So, we are pleased to continue this series of direct, exclusive charter flights from a choice of UK regional airports to Bergen throughout winter  2019.

On this 12-day cruise you will sail 2,500 nautical miles along Norway's raw and beautiful coastline.  Visit 34 ports north and southbound, crossing the Arctic Circle twice, spend 7 days in the 'auroral zone' giving you the best opportunity to view the magnificent Northern Lights.

The best way to see the Aurora Borealis in its full glory is on-board a small low-lit ship.  Small ships are able to cruise along the sheltered Norwegian coastline without the disruption of artificial ambient light.  What better way to go 'hunting for the lights'.

Many ships have a dedicated 'Expedition Team'.  Hand-picked hosts, guides and experts many of whom have grown-up in the region and know the towns and villages and can provide you with facts and local folklore.  There are many opportunities to go ashore to explore the towns and villages.  Or take one of the many excursions such as husky dog or reindeer sledding, snowmobile safaris, visit a snow hotel, meet the Sami, visit the North Cape......to name just a few!

All the ships sell local products, souvenirs, books, postcards and knitwear, there is something for everyone.  After a busy day of activities and excursions the lounge provides the perfect place to unwind.  Just sink into a comfy chair or sofa with a drink and watch the magnificent fjords go by.

The food on-board is about passion and the quality of the ingredients.  All the produce is local and seasonal, so when the ship docks the chefs disembark to select the finest catch from the quayside.  You will also be treated to local delicacies such as cured lamb from Hellesylt, roast reindeer from Finnmark, freshly baked bread, homemade cloudberry jam or aquavit ice cream from the local dairy - a smorgasbord of flavours!

Holiday Itinerary

Day 1 - Your voyage begins - Bergen embarkation

Your journey begins in the southern port of Bergen the ‘City of Seven Mountains’, renowned for its colourful wooden wharfs.
After embarkation, you will enjoy a tasty dinner buffet, based on the best ingredients from the coast, whilst sailing north from Bergen along the Hjeltefjord.  This is the same route the Vikings once plied to the Shetland Islands and beyond.
Spend the rest of the evening relaxing and admiring the spectacular landscape, either from the deck or from the panorama lounge.

Day 2 - Majestic mountain and idyllic fjords -Florø to Molde

If you wake up early, you have the chance to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Nordfjord, followed by a delicious breakfast. As we sail past the West Cape, we are out on the open sea. The ship then navigates through skerries and islands before reaching Ålesund.
Distinguished by its numerous spires, towers and highly-ornate buildings, Ålesund is a town renowned for its beautiful art nouveau architecture. It owes this to a devastating fire that burned a large proportion of the city to the ground in 1904. The entire town has been subsequently rebuilt in the fashionable style of the time – Art Nouveau.

Excursion options: hikes, Art Nouveau walk, aquarium visit.

Day 3 - Vikings and Goths - Kristiansund to Rørvik

Along this western part of the Norwegian coast you will sail in the footsteps of Vikings.  The highlight of day 3 is the Viking city of Trondheim.  Build by King Olav Tryggvason in 997AD.  It is Norway’s third largest city and ancient capitol.

The city is famous for ‘Nidaros Cathedral’, Norway’s only Gothic-style cathedral built over the burial place of St. Olav, Norway’s patron saint.  Or stroll around the charming Bakklandet district where artisans and traders live in small wooden houses.

Excursion options: Trondheim city tour and Nidaros Catherdral or Munkholmen monastery

Day 4 - Welcome to the Artic - Brønnøysund to Svolvær

Today we cross the Arctic Circle!

When you cross this invisible line of 66 degrees 33 minutes north, it’s considered a special rite of passage, one worthy of a celebration.  So, if it’s your first time in Artic waters you can participate in a daytime ‘Arctic Circle’ ceremony on deck.

Above this point you are sailing into the ‘auroral’ zone where sighting the ‘Northern Lights’ are common.  From here you sail past Norway’s second largest glacier – Svartisen, along the beautiful Helgeland coast and up towards inlets and jagged mountains of Lofoten.  Through the narrow Raftsund pass to behold the majesty of –  Trollfjord.

Excursion options: winter hike in Bodø, RIB safari to Saltstraumen, Loftpils Brewery

Day 5 - The Artic wilderness - Stokmarknes to Skjervøy

On this streatch you are truly sailing into the Artic wilderness.  There’s plenty to see as the ship navigates the narrow channels towards the stunning city of Tromsø, the capital of the Artic.

This is a small and friendly city, full of charm and history and where many explorers began their Artic expeditions.  It’s the perfect winter wonderland with many excursions to take you into the snowy landscape.

Excursion options: dog sledding, Sámi adventure, whale watching, Polar history walk, mountain hike

Day 6 - Top of the world, North Cape - Øksfjord to Berlevåg

Today the ship heads towards the sub-Artic, crossing the 71st parallel to Honningsvåg the gateway to the spectacular North Cape and the homeland of the indigenous Sámi people.

You’ll have the opportunity to visit the North Cape plateau, at 71°10’21´N, only 2,000 km from the geographic North Pole.  It is Europe’s northern most outpost and marked by a Globe monument which has now become a popular ‘selfie’ spot.

Excursion options: North Cape, fishing village visit

Day 7 - Gateway to the East - Båtsfjord to Berlevåg

The vistas become more dramatic as we approach Kirkenes. Arriving in Vadsø early morning and just after breakfast in Kirkenes – 30° east.  You will be further east than Istanbul and St. Petersburg.
This is the ship’s turning point for the return journey south. Kirkenes is known as the capital of the Barents region and gateway to the east it is also the home of the Snowhotel and a number of small but facinating heritage museums.

The Russian border is a just few miles away and you will notice that the road signs are written in both Norwegian and Russian.

Excursions options: Russian boarder visit, snowmobile safari, Snowhotel, husky dog adventure

Day 8 - Northern Lights, Artic choirs - Mehamn to Tromsø

On this polar streach keep you eyes peeled for the magnificent Northern Lights and for ‘Fruholmen’ Europe’s northernmost lighthouse.

Then a stop at Hammerfest the home of the UNECO-listed Meridian Column, which was erected in 1854 to commemorate the first precise geographic measurement of the globe.  Then onward through the magnificent snow-capped Lyngen Alps, arriving in Tromsø in the evening so you can enjoy a local nightout.

Excursion options: Midnight concert in the Artic Catherdral, snowmobile trip in the Polar night

Day 9 - The unspoilt beauty of Lofoten - Tromsø to Stamsund

For many, sailing along this stunning stretch of the coastline past the beautiful Vesterålen islands towards Lofoten is the highlight of their voyage.  The Lofoten Islands are famed for their spectacular scenery of secluded white beaches ans turquoise lagoons, unique to Norway.
As the ship enters the narrow Trollfjord strait at Raftsundet you will be mesmerised by the steepness of the  mountains on both sides.  This area is also renowned for its fishing.

Excursion options:  Lofoten by horse, fishing village walk, mountain hike in Lofoten

Day 10 - A date with the Seven Sisters - Bodø to Rørvik

To day we cross the Arctic Circle at 66°33’ N going south and sail along the Helgeland coast, passing hundreds of islets, fertile farmland, steep granite walls rich in local lore and the distinctive and famous Torghatten (rising 258 m above sea level) with its distinctive hole. The hole is 160 m long, 35 m high and 20 m wide, and was created during the ice age.
Another highlight of today are the Seven Sisters mountain range. All seven mountains are between 900 and 1,100 m high, and have influenced many ancient myths and said to be seven troll sisters and daughters of King Sulis.

Excursion options:  Brønnøysund village walk

Day 11 - In cod we trust - Trondheim to Ålesund

Today provides another opportunity to explore the royal city of Trondheim in the morning then onto Kristiansund Norway’s ‘cured cod capital’.

Kristiansund has steadily provided the town with a wealth not only in the fishing but also shipbuilding and oil industries.

Excursion options: Trondheim city tour and Nidaros Catherdral, Bergtatt marble mine, husky safari

Day 12 - Voyage end - Bergen

As the world’s most beautiful voyage draws to a close and before docking  in Bergen, there are some nautical miles of fascinating scenery ahead.  Including the picturesque Nordfjord and the enormous Jostedal Glacier. Here the fjord widens to the east and forges 90 km inland to Loen and Olden.

Finally as you disembark in Bergen you may still feel haven’t seen enough of Norway so why not add-on a few extra nights and explore Bergen and take a day trip on the Flåm Railway.
